Hamza started his political journey in 2011 after he was selected as the general secretary of Punjab by the Pakistan Muslim League (N). In 2008, he contested the Pakistan general election as an independent candidate, but he could not win the seat. In 2008, he was elected as a candidate for the Pakistan Muslim League (N) to the National Assembly of Pakistan. He was re-elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of PML-N in 2013 and 2018. In 2018, he was also elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab as a candidate of PML-N in the Pakistan general election. On 13 August 2018, he was nominated for the office of Chief Minister of Punjab by PML-N, but he was unable to win the seat. On 25 August 2018, he was nominated as the opposition leader in Punjab Assembly by the PML-N and was appointed as the leader of the opposition in the Punjab Assembly on 6 September 2018. He is serving as the Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) since May 2019. When Hamza was serving as the leader of the opposition, he made various initiatives to improve education and health. He started women’s colleges in Gowalmandi and Choona Mandi, model hospitals, and restored historic sites.
Corruption charges against Hamza
On 11 June 2019, Hamza was alleged of money laundering and holding assets beyond means, and he was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau over corruption charges.
Transaction of money through Benami accounts
In 2021, Hamza was alleged of transferring Rs. 16.3 bn through 28 Benami accounts. According to the agency, these accounts belonged to eleven employees of the Sharif group. In 2021, Hamza and his father were arrested in connection to this case.
Sugar Scandal Case
In 2020, Hamza was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency in connection to a sugar scandal case. The agency alleged that Rs. 25 bn were transferred by employees of Ramzan (RSML) and AI-Arabia Sugar Mills (ASML) using fake accounts. Hamza stated that these transactions were business-related. He was granted bail on 24 February 2021.

In 2017, Ayesh Ahad called a press conference and stated that Hamza married her in 2010. Hamza said that the allegations against him were wrong. In an interview, she talked about what happened with her and her family after she filed the case, she said,
Severe torture has been inflicted on my daughter (Ayesha) and grand daughter (Mahnoor) on the order of the chief minister secretariat. Investigation Officer Zulifqar Cheema kept torturing Ms Ayesha for hours, pressing her to write it down that she has no relation with Mr Hamza and that she will not talk about it before media.”
